When a film sets out to deliver a message without sacrificing its entertainment value, it embarks on a perilous path. Amit Rai’s ‘OMG 2’ walks a fine line between appealing to Akshay Kumar’s superstardom and addressing the sensitive subject of sex education. The 2012 prequel to ‘OMG 2’ was a sleeper smash starring Paresh Rawal. Pankaj Tripathi plays small-town Shiv bhakt Kanti Mudgal in the 2023 sequel. When his adolescent kid is caught up in an MMS scandal in which he is seen masturbating in his classroom, hell breaks loose in Kanti’s life and family. Vivek, Kanti’s kid, is stigmatized and shunned not only by his school but also by society as a whole. Akshay Kumar, who plays a Shiva devotee, intervenes with the divine aim of assisting Kanti in fighting a court case that requires him to take on powers greater than himself in order to restore his son’s self-esteem.
‘OMG 2’ has just the right mix of humour, wit, and reality, topped with dollops of powerful acting from a strong ensemble cast led by Pankaj Tripathi. Amit Rai’s writing is snappy, and the conversation is spot on. Everyone from Kanti’s kid to the judge supervising his case to his secretary is perfectly cast in parts that seem tailor-made for them. Despite the fact that an essential topic like sex education hangs over the entire film, the pace and pacing of the film never falter. Yami Gautam, who portrays the opposition attorney defending the institution, is outstanding. We can’t think of a single performer in the film who doesn’t wow you with their acting abilities.
Akshay Kumar is perfectly cast in the role, and he maintains that naughty smile and sparkles in his eye throughout the film. His scenes with Tripathi are particularly memorable. Rai’s approach to addressing the taboo and stigma connected with sex education is just brilliant. On the other hand, the second half, particularly the final 20-30 minutes, feels disconnected and overly prolonged. The courtroom sequences are occasionally bland, and the dialogue breaks are far too long.
Overall, ‘OMG 2’ has the perfect balance of everything. In a nutshell, it succeeds as an entertainer with a valid message. Fans of Akshay Kumar will be in for a treat as the actor delivers one of his career-best performances.
