World Boxing Championship: Lovlina Borgohain bags gold

Lovlina Borgohain added fourth Gold on India’s tally at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in New Delhi on Sunday.

She is the Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist. She has shown a massive performance in 70-75Kg finals and defeated Australia’s Caitlin Anne Parker with 5-2 split decision win after a review.

In the finals both the boxers were cautious in their approach while opening and there were punches from both the ends. After a tight neck-to-neck opening round the decision went in favour of Lovlina by the slightest margin.

Lovlina gave two powerful blows in the initial stages of the second round and Parker, being a strong opponent , connected an uppercut on the Indian. The second round came in Parker’s favour and she won by 4-1.

Parker was in an attacking mode in the final round where she pushed Lovlina in the corner immediately after it started. Lovline had to maintain the attacking approach too and connected a few jabs on the opponent. After nine minutes of powerful boxing when less than a minute was left before the bell Parker connected a jab on Lovlina.

This is the first golf for Lovlina at the competition as she has won bronze in 2018 and 2019 editions.

2022 was not a good year for Lovlina after the Tokyo win as she lost both the World Championships and Commonwealth Games. However she gave a strong performance at the nationals and also won gold at the Asian Boxing Championship in November last year.

The professional boxer from Assam came up with an appreciable performance which includes a 4-1 split decision win against former world champion Li Qian of China.

There were few more achievements for India at the World Championships finals on Saturday in different categories:
Nikhat Zareen defeated Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam in the 48-50 kg category and won her second Gold at Worlds
Nitu Ghanghas (45-48 kg) won Gold
Saweety Boora (75-81 kg) had won gold.
