India’s first underwater metro route will be opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday in Kolkata. This historic project will highlight the country’s progress in building infrastructure.
The underwater service is a part of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor, which will cross the Hooghly river for a distance of 16.6 km and pass through Howrah Maidan-Esplanade.
The West Bengal state capital’s twin cities of Salt Lake and Howrah will be connected by metro service. There will be three subterranean stations among the six.
In about 45 seconds, it is anticipated to speed across a 520-meter section beneath the Hooghly.
Dignitaries and high ranking officials will be present at the inauguration ceremony.
Passenger services will begin later, even though the inauguration is set for tomorrow, Wednesday, according to Eastern Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Kaushik Mitra
The historic project’s groundbreaking takes place less than a year after the Kolkata Metro made history in April 2023 by driving a train through the underwater tunnel as part of experimental work, a first for India.
In an interview with India Today TV earlier this week, Kaushik Mitra stated that the underwater metro service was a gift from our Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the people of Kolkata.
With this inauguration, a long-cherished dream will come true, he stated.
The Prime Minister will also open the Taratala-Majerhat and Kavi Subhash-Hemanta Mukhopadhyay metro sections in Kolkata today in addition to the underwater metro tunnel.
He is expected to speak at a public rally in Barasat, North 24 Parganas district, on Wednesday afternoon.
Shortly after arriving in Kolkata on Tuesday evening, Modi visited the Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan, where Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj, the president of Ramakrishna Math and Mission, is receiving medical attention.
The Prime Minister wrote on X that he visited a hospital upon arriving in Kolkata to inquire about the well-being of Srimat Swami Smaranananda ji Maharaj, the President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. We’re all praying for him to stay well and heal quickly.
Two weeks had passed since Prime Minister Modi’s previous visit to West Bengal, where he had spoken at public rallies in the districts of Arambagh in Hooghly and Krishnanagar in Nadia.
