Every year on July 26, Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed throughout the nation. This significant day marks the triumph of the Indian armed forces in the Kargil War, which was fought against Pakistan in 1999. It serves as a solemn occasion to remember and honour the courage and sacrifices made by the soldiers during the conflict. The military operation undertaken during the war is commonly referred to as Operation Vijay.
This year will mark the 24th commemoration of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Kargil Vijay Diwas 2023: Background
The historical confrontation between Pakistan and India erupted when Pakistani forces crossed into the Indian territory in the Kargil district, which was part of Jammu and Kashmir at that time (now in Ladakh Union Territory). This military confrontation, known as the Kargil War, spanned from May to July 1999.
Following the initial report of infiltration by local shepherds on May 3, 1999, the Indian Army initiated ‘Operation Vijay.’ The primary objective of this operation was to reclaim the Indian territory along the Line of Control (LoC) that had been occupied by Pakistani infiltrators. Subsequently, on May 26, the Indian Air Force launched an airstrike under ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ to provide support to the Indian Army’s efforts.
July 26, 1999, marked the declaration of Operation Vijay as a success by the Indian Army, as they managed to recapture all the military posts in Kargil that had been occupied by Pakistani infiltrators.
