Beijing wins bid to host 2027 World Athletics Championships

Beijing will host the World Athletics Championships in 2027, the World Athletics Council has confirmed. With this choice, the athletics community has made a major comeback to Beijing, almost twenty years after the city successfully hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2022 Winter Games.

At its 234th meeting in Glasgow, the World Athletics Council decided that Beijing would host the World Athletics Championships.

Beijing’s successful bid was emphasized by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, who also emphasized China’s prominence as a major sports market and the city’s prior experience hosting the 15th edition of the championships.

Congratulations to Beijing for winning the right to hold the 2027 World Athletics Championships, which will take place 12 years after our athletes lit up the National Stadium for the competition’s 15th iteration. With a cumulative audience of 368.9 million, China led the world in Wanda Diamond League broadcast consumption in 2023, according to Coe.

Our last four World Athletics Championships have now been awarded to the world’s four largest economies: the USA, the EU, Japan, and China, Coe continued. China has been announced as our next host nation.

Beijing’s sports authorities are determined to prepare for the event with utmost care and have conveyed their gratitude for the confidence reposed in them. They want to provide athletes and spectators with an experience they won’t soon forget by utilizing the city’s distinctive fusion of old world charm and contemporary energy.

Vice President of the Chinese Athletics Association and member of the World Athletics Council Wang Nan expressed gratitude to the WAC for giving China the opportunity to host the World Championships and pledged to provide an excellent competition.

We are appreciative of World Athletics’ recognition and confidence in Beijing and China. In order to further contribute to the global development of athletics, Wang stated that the CAA and the Beijing organizing committee will collaborate to ensure that every effort is made to prepare for the championships, guarantee that they will be held to the highest standards, and present an amazing World Athletics Championships.

Furthermore, with the World Athletics Championships to come, Beijing will have yet another feather in its cap as the decision upholds its exceptional distinction as the first city to host both the summer and winter Olympics.

In 2025, Nanjing, China, will play host to the World Indoor Athletics Championships. In addition, they will serve as the host cities for the two Diamond League 2024 events in April—Xiamen and Shanghai.
