In a survey conducted by cybersecurity platform McAfee, more than 90% of Indians reported having come across phony profiles on dating apps.
A recent investigation into the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) tools on online dating and the rise in scams was conducted by McAfee, a company that provides online security solutions. It is what they discovered:
Seven thousand people from seven different countries—including India—were surveyed for the study. It was discovered that a large number of people have encountered phony social media accounts or dating website profiles. Approximately 98% of Indians reported having come across these phony profiles, and 39% reported having communicated with con artists posing as possible romantic partners.
The problem is made worse by the fact that some con artists are now using AI technologies to create convincing messages and images. This makes it more difficult for those searching for love online to determine whether someone is genuine or not.
It’s interesting to note that a large percentage of Indians surveyed admitted to using AI tools for online dating. Approximately 65% of respondents claimed to have created images or other content for their dating profiles using AI. Furthermore, because it gives them more confidence, over half are considering sending Valentine’s Day messages to their love interests via AI. The majority of respondents, however, stated that they would be offended to learn that a Valentine’s Day message was actually composed by a machine.
Many people have found AI useful, despite some people having mixed feelings about it. In fact, 81% of respondents claimed that using AI-generated content had piqued others’ interest more than using their own.
But AI has an impact on more than just online dating. Additionally, McAfee alerted users to a rise in Valentine’s Day scams. More spam emails, malicious URLs, and malware campaigns have been observed that target consumers looking to buy Valentine’s Day presents. McAfee recommends the following actions to safeguard yourself against AI and online romance scams:
- Be wary of messages from individuals you haven’t met in person, particularly if they seem overly general or superficial.
- Reverse image searches can be used to confirm the legitimacy of profile pictures.
- Avoid sending gifts or cash to people you haven’t met in person.
- Discuss your new love interest with a trusted person, and take note if they voice any concerns.
