Elon Musk with other experts urges for a pause on training of AI systems that can outperform GPT-4

In an open letter citing the potential risks to society and humanity Elon Musk along with the group of artificial intelligence experts and industry executives have called for a six-months pause in training of systems more powerful than GPT-4.

The non-profit Future of Life Institute had issued a letter that is signed by more than 1,000 people including Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque and had called for a pause on advanced AI development until shared safety protocols for such designs were developed, implemented and audited by independent experts.

The letter mentioned that “ Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable”

The details of the potential risks to society and civilisation by human-competitive AI systems in the form of economic and political disruptions was also mentioned in the letter and developers are asked to work with policymakers on governance and regulatory authorities.

The letter was an answer to the action taken by the EU police force Europol on Monday by joining a chorus of ethical and legal concerns over advanced AI like ChatGPT and warned against the potential misuse of the system in phishing attempts, disinformation, and cybercrime.

Since the release of Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT last year has instigated rivals to launch similar products, and companies to integrate the same or similar technologies into their apps and products.
