Meet Sagarika Chatterjee, an inspiration behind Rani Mukherjee’s latest movie “Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway

The trailer of the movie “Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway” is released recently. It describes the struggle of an Indian mother against the country’s government to get reunited with her two children.

The story is based on the real-life event and battle faced by an Indian mother named Sagarika Chatterjee in Norway.
The movie is a depiction of her struggle in Norway who fought against the government to get reunited with her children who have been forcefully sent to foster homes until the age of 18 as per Norwegian law.

Who is Sagarika Chatterjee and know about her struggle in Norway

Sagarika married a geophysicist Anurup Bhattacharya and they moved to Norway in 2007 where she gave birth to her first child who was an autistic. She placed Abhigyaan into a family kindergarten and gave birth to her second girl child Aishwarya in 2010.

Her peaceful moments turned haywire when in 2011 the Norwegian Child welfare services known as Barnevernet took both her children away to place them in foster care till they turned 18 years of age claiming Chatterjee and her husband as “unfit parents”.

Sagarika was charged to be an “unfit mother” and “mentally unstable” as she fed her child by hand (it was looked upon as forceful feeding in Norway) and she made the children sleep on the same bed which were frowned upon in Norway.

Sagarika and her husband’s relations began to fall apart due to their struggle for their children. It was a long legal battle for her with the Norwegian government and sought help from the Indian Government and finally got her children back.

The movie “Mrs. Chatterjee Vs Norway” is set for its release on 17th March 2023 directed by Ashima Chibber.
