Movie Review: “Satyaprem Ki Katha”

The movie “Satyaprem Ki Katha” stars Kartik Aryan and Kiara Advani in the lead role. Kartik Aryan plays the role of a good-looking bachelor named Satyaprem who is always unlucky in love until Katha played by Kiara Advani enters his life.

Satyaprem insists to Katha that she should date him even though she was already dating someone when Katha met him. The reason he gave was their name goes well in the Hashtag.

Satyaprem is from Ahmedabad. Born and brought up in a middle-class family and Satyaprem is called Sattu. Sattu along with his father does the household chores (Majority by Sattu) whereas his mother Diwali (Supriya Pathak Shah) is a Garba teacher and his sister Sejal (Shikha Talsania) teaches Zumba.

The movie tries to be a little different by showing men doing the household chores and women being the breadwinner for the family but a good presentation signifying the division of labour is still missing.

The movie depicts that once Sattu gets married his mother and sister start doing the household chores feeling ashamed of the same but they did not stop working.

Katha had tried to commit suicide after she ended the relationship with her existing boyfriend and the movie depicts the usual male character of Satyaprem who tries to pacify a heartbroken girl and provide her with the required comfort and care. In the movie, Sameer Vidwans and the writer Karan Shrikant has depicted a commendable stand on marital rape and Bollywood movies do not portray any consent.

Kartik Aryan’s role is quite similar to what he played in the movie Shehzada however Kiara Advani’s character is about dealing with her past trauma including facing new challenges and she captures every emotion rightfully.

Technically the movie “Satyaprem Ki Katha” is beautiful to watch because of the camerawork done by Ayananka Bose. It captures the typical Bollywood romance in a refined manner. The movie is considered to be musical and fits well in the required places.

Many composers are involved in making the music catchy and soulful like Meet Bros, Tanishk Bagchi, and Payal Dev among others. The remake of the song “Pasoori” is good in itself until not compared with the original one.

The biggest issue with Satyaprem Ki Katha is that the loudness of the journey of the main lead covers the message in the movie. Satyaprem was supposed to be the side hero in Katha’s life journey but it did not materialise in the movie.
