After a tense day, the five teams in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 formed their teams for the tournament’s debut. On Monday, February 13 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, ten rounds of sale were held, followed by three rounds of rapid auction. The auction featured the Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, UP Warriors, and Gujarat Giants.
Out of the 448 players auctioned, 87 were sold, and a total of 59.5 crore was paid. While 30 players were overseas, 47 Indians found teams. Harmanpreet Kaur became the first player in the championship’s history to be auctioned off. The Indian captain was sold to the Mumbai Indians for INR 1.80 crores. Nat Sciver-Brunt, an English all-rounder, won the auction for 3.20 crores. The Australians also stole the show. Smriti Mandhana became the most expensive player after being purchased by RCB for INR 3.40 crore.
